HOBART SHOWGROUNDS RENEWAL
A renewed masterplan and showground pavilion has been commissioned by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania.
The two designs demonstrate the distillation of RAST’s ‘combining philosophy’ in pragmatic ways. An arena is combined with housing, a community centre is combined with an event space, boulevard streets are combined with parking, and importantly, Hobart Showgrounds Renewal is combined with the Glenorchy ‘High Street’ and transport future.
The initiating pavilion project on the site underpins the transformation. This building project will consolidate its site-based activities and form a home. In turn, this home serves RAST’s immediate neighbourhood and it serves its adjusting and widening regional base. As agriculture, technology, demographics, environmental practices and educational methods adjust, RAST will take a nurturing role.
RAST will build a ‘part of town,’ not a ‘feature,’ since residents and visitors share attraction to real ‘places.’ Places that are busy with life, where people live, work, learn, stay, play, celebrate and do what people do in real places.
The Hobart Showgrounds are located in Glenorchy, Tasmania (nipaluna, lutruwita), on the lands of the Muwinina people of the Palawa nation.
